The moment a family receives a serious diagnosis for their sick child, they find themselves at the beginning of a long journey full of unknowns and challenges. To find the care their child needs, they may travel far from home, leaving behind their community, their job, and everything that sustains them. They may face hours of exhausted commuting every day trying to hold their lives together while spending every moment they can at the hospital. They may throw a couple days of clothes in a suitcase and end up staying for months.
For RMHC Bay Area, this is the moment when our mission begins.
Double Your Impact for Oakland House
Join the Matching Gift Challenge Supported with Love by the Freedman Family
Thanks to a generous match from the Freedman family, your donation can go twice as far in expanding the Oakland House from 7 to 21 guest rooms. This expansion means more families can stay steps away from their child’s care, surrounded by comfort and community. Be part of this next chapter and help us reach our $200,000 match goal.
Our Legacy of
Caring for Families
For over 45 years, we’ve kept families from around the world close to their child’s critical and life-saving care, providing food, shelter, and comfort when they need it most.
Families from all walks of life travel to the Bay Area for world-class medical care, many from under-resourced communities with limited financial means. With average stays of 33 days, over 40% must leave or cut back on work, adding financial strain to the already challenging circumstance of caring for a critically ill child.
Our Three Bay Area Locations
Ronald McDonald House Family Room San Francisco
Located inside UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, staff and volunteers provide respite, meals and support for families.
Ronald McDonald House Oakland
Serving UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, offering seven bedrooms for immunosuppressed patients and their families, plus respite, sibling support, wellness programs, and meals.
Ronald McDonald House Stanford
Serving Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital with 123 bedrooms, wellness programs, meals, an onsite school, and summer camp.
With $30 million of new investment over the next three years, we will show up for even more families in four powerful ways:

Investing in Oakland
Building comprehensive support for more families at Ronald McDonald House Oakland by tripling our guest rooms, creating a dedicated sibling program and providing specialized services for immunocompromised children.

Feeding More Families
Ensuring that families facing medical crisis never have to go hungry by doubling the number of meals we serve through our in-hospital Feed the Love program.

Growing In-Hospital Programs
Reaching families during long days in the hospital by expanding Family Room programs and adding more Happy Wheels Hospitality Carts that bring care essentials, snacks, and kids’ activities to children’s bedside.

Building for the Future
Investing in our Strategic Growth Fund and Endowment so that we can respond to urgent needs as they arise, as well as increase our capacity to innovate, evolve and grow in the years to come.
Across more than 45 years of caring, we’ve learned:
The journey of a family touched by a serious childhood illness never ends.
It becomes a part of their history, their identity, and their world.
And they never forget who was by their side.
